With the summer arriving many high street stores, supermarkets and mail-order companies will be sending out millions of new catalogues to customers promoting their wares which usually resulted in old catalogues ending up at the landfill.

However South Bedford Council Recycling Officer Sarah Molloy has another idea. She pledges that her council will recycle every old catalogue, urging householders to put them in their orange recycling bins for the council to take away.

She said:

“Many of these catalogues use a lot of paper and responsible companies like Argos are reminding their customers to make sure the old ones are put in the recycling bin too.

“If you do put an old catalogue in your orange bin or bag, then South Beds District Council will make sure it gets recycled for you.”

The people of Scotland used more than one billion plastic carrier bags last year adding to the recycling problems facing the nation. Plastic carrier bags, unlike other plastic materials, usually end up at the landfill due to the difficulty of recycling them and where these particular recycling headaches are concerned the best way to solve the problem is to say no to them.

That’s the idea behind Say No To Plastic, an anti-carrier bag campaign launched by 34-year-old Heather Suttie from Glasgow.

She said:

“I live in the west end of the city and I take my dog for a walk three times a day.

“I got quite a lot of press through it and people started getting in touch to ask me what they could do about it in their local area, which was very encouraging.”

UK households should be rewarded financially as an incentive to recycle more. That’s the view of Shadow Chancellor George Osborne from the Tory Party in a speech to the environmental lobby group the Green Alliance.

Mr Osborne points to America where thousands of households in hundreds of cities are rewarded by as much as $50 a month to recycle more, which has led to increased recycling rates.

The Shadow Chancellor has called on the UK to follow suit, proposing that the money saved from sending less waste to landfill should be used to fund the scheme.

“In some (American) communities, it has increased the amount of household waste being recycled by more than 200%,” Mr Osborne said.

“I want to see this innovative approach rolled out across the UK.”

Job description: We were appointed to clear a 500 + room high school in Hamilton, Glasgow for South Lanarkshire City Council who gave us a remit of 7 days to complete the job. Abacus took a team of 12 men to Glasgow along with 4 of our vans and a caravan. The team remained in Glasgow for the full 5 days to get the job completed. We used our vans to load and remove all recyclable material on a daily basis and hired in skips for the general waste. Work commenced at 6.00am in the morning until 10.00pm at night every day to full completion of the job. We removed, dismantled and recycled desks, chairs, filing cabinets, computers, heavy machinery, electrical appliances, cardboard, paper, scrap metal and various other articles of waste, over 300 ton all told.

Norwich City Football Club have teamed up with Broadland District Council to install three mobile phone recycling banks across the district. The unwanted mobile phones will be sent to Love2Recycle for recycling with funds raised going back into Norwich’s football academy.

Portfolio Holder for Environmental Policy Development Councillor John Fisher said:

“This latest scheme represents just one of the new initiatives Broadland are rolling out to try and push their recycling rate above the 50% mark.

“The cost of refuse collection going down helps to enable us to keep council tax low for our residents.”

Former Canaries ace Jeremy Goss, now Community Ambassador, handed over the bright yellow bins at Thorpe Lodge last week, saying:

“It’s great that the recycling of mobile phones will benefit the Club’s Academy, in particular the Tactic Zone initiative, which currently stands at over £180,000.

“It’s a great way and a simple way for our fans to play their part in helping to secure the future of the club.”

Gas from a landfill waste site in Cambridge is being turned into green electricity. The methane gas produced from decomposing rubbish used to be burnt or pumped back into the atmosphere, but could now power up to 1,400 homes.

Donarbon waste promotion manager Mark Shelton said:

“We try to recycle as much waste as we can, but there are some things that still go to landfill.

“But at least we’re able to make use of that waste for energy.”

Gas from the landfill is also being converted into hydrogen and oxygen for Cambridge University and Cambridge city council also plans to run a bin lorry on hydrogen generated from the plant.

Peter borough Council have began a new campaign to raise recycling levels by introducing new green bins on Bridge Street in the city centre. The campaign will hopefully see less rubbish being sent to landfill sites and more reusable materials being recycled.

The more common black bins are gradually being replaced with green ones. The public can now place their empty drinks bottles, cans etc. into the green bins.

A spokesman for Peterborough Council said:

“Thousands of canned and bottled drinks are consumed by people as they move around the city centre.

“This means that large quantities of valuable aluminium and plastic are lost as resources. We hope the new bins will encourage a change of behaviour and help people make recycling a natural part of everyday life, no matter where they are.”

The move is supported by a Government initiative called Recycle on the go, which will see the city council aim to raise the proportion of materials being recycled from last year’s 46 per cent to over 65 per cent by 2020.

Under European Union and UK environmental protection laws, Peterborough, which landfilled 50,000 tonnes last year, must cut totals to just 15,909 tonnes by 2020.

The government’s pledge to cut carbon emissions by as much as 80% by 2050 has no chance according to a recent report conducted by experts at Oxford University - not unless councils offer tax rebates to encourage greener homes that is.

The study by Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute and commissioned by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) states that UK housing is among the worst in Europe when it comes to energy efficiency and as 27 per cent of Britain’s carbon emissions come from home energy use something needs done to bring it down.

Brian Berry of the FMB said:

“The government needs to provide a financial incentive to kick start their strategy to make homes greener.

“We suggest a rebate in council tax of about 50-60% of the cost of the work. By cutting council tax everyone can benefit - home owners and tenants.”

The report also discussed for VAT to be reduced to 5% for energy efficient renovations and repairs.
